    Background & Career Path

What inspired you to pursue a career in law?

I’ve always had an interest in people and the issues they face, and that’s exactly what/who the law is about.

Where did you study law, and what are your academic qualifications?

    • Bachelor of Laws (Honours) Charles Darwin University
    • Master of Legal Practice – Australian National University

Do you have any other certifications or accreditations?

I’m slowly working on a degree in philosophy.

    Expertise & Specialisation

What areas of law do you specialise in, and what attracted you to these areas?

I specialise in institutional abuse law. While no amount of money can take away the pain the abuse has caused, to be able to secure compensation for clients so that they can reset their lives as well as access care and support services provides me with a great deal of professional satisfaction.

Many of my clients have lived remarkable lives, filled with stories of survival and resilience. Hearing their experiences and being part of their journey towards resolution and compensation is incredibly rewarding.

It’s not just about the legal victories but the personal connections and the sense that, in some way, I’m contributing to their process of healing and moving forward.

What professional achievement, or particular case outcome, are you most proud of?

While it’s hard to single out one particular case, the collective impact of my work stands out as a significant achievement in my career.

Have you received any awards or recognition in your field?

I believe that receiving a simple “thank you” or appreciation from a client is what matters the most.

    Philosophy & Mentorship

What do you believe sets Trilby Misso apart from others?

    The people.

What trends in the legal industry interest you the most?

Artificial Intelligence (AI) presents enormous opportunities. AI’s ability to efficiently sort through extensive records may greatly improve our ability to demonstrate a client’s life story.

What advice would you give to someone starting their career in law?

Stay humble and respectful, because a lot more can be achieved by maintaining harmony. Also, stay curious in the sense that you will never totally know the law. It is important that you keep learning as you go.

What professional attribute/attributes define an impactful, effective lawyer?

    • An eye for detail
    • An ability to analyse a lot of information and issues, and really focus in on what’s important.
    • An ability to really listen to people.
    • Time management.
    • An ability to apply the law to the facts.
    • Resilience and persistence.

    Challenges & Learning

Can you talk about a significant challenge you’ve overcome in your career?

It’s challenging to pinpoint a single one. Every day brings its own set of significant challenges, each requiring its own resolution and approach.

What’s the most valuable lesson you’ve learned during your tenure in law?

As above – stay humble, respectful and curious.

    Personal Insights

What do you enjoy the most about life at Trilby Misso?

    The people.

Outside of law, what are your passions or interests?

Outside law, my interests include spending time with family and my partner, keeping fit, enjoying films and art, working on house renovations, and travelling.

What’s your favourite piece of fiction? This could be a book, movie, TV show, or something else.

I read a lot, so picking a favorite is hard. However, “Prophet Song” by Paul Lynch, a Booker Prize winner, has been a standout for me this year. Fern Brady’s biography “Strong Female Character” also caught my attention for its insightful narrative.

What is one thing about you, that people would be surprised to know?

Tough question! When I was born, my parents were living on a remote Aboriginal community in Arnhem land. The community is called Maningrida.
