Ty's the limit

25 August 2010

Ty the Golden Retriever x Lab is making new friends wherever he goes in Brisbane.

The 12-week-old puppy is Vision Australia's latest canine recruit for its 'Seeing Eye Dog' program.

He has started training for his new career in Brisbane and met staff from law firm Trilby Misso, which will sponsor the loveable pooch through to his graduation in two years' time.

The name Ty is the short version of Tybalt, which is Latin for "he who sees". The name was selected after a poll of Trilby Misso staff and endorsed by Vision Australia.

In a first for Vision Australia, Trilby Misso held an official naming ceremony for Ty at its Brisbane headquarters, which was attended by Vision Australia's General Manager of Marketing and Fundraising Trish Egan and Puppy Development Supervisor Jacky Tupangaia.

"We are delighted to be sponsoring this puppy who has now embarked on a very important career – to be the eyes for a person who is blind or has low vision," said Trilby Misso Chairman Tony Hanmer.

"We are looking forward to following his training through to his graduation two years from now knowing that we are contributing to helping someone live a full and independent life."

Trilby Misso is sponsoring Ty as part of its Community Spirit Program.

"It would be wonderful if other Brisbane firms followed Trilby Misso's initiative," Ms Tupangaia told Trilby Misso staff.

Trilby Misso has been running its Community Spirit Program for the past four years.

The program has contributed to organisations such as the Royal Children's Hospital, Youngcare, the Leukaemia Foundation, the Paraplegic Benefit Fund, Multicap, Montrose Access, Brain Injury Association of Queensland and the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
